Philippines
I love Southeast Asia. Returning there for our shoot in the Philippines makes me feel like a raindrop entering the river. So naturally I am out of bed earlier than usual today. Nineteen hours (layovers!) later, I am driving into Metro Manila after landing at Aquino Airport and I get my first look at the local paper. Welcome back big fella ... Let's see what's news today. Well, it's the 61st anniversary of the Hiroshima bomb, anyone caught with drugs will be punished by death, it's going to be a scorcher out there today, it's humid and, oh yeah, I can smell the city before I see it. Turn the page ... Mount Mayon is erupting, there are earthquakes in Fiji, Mr. Janjalani, the Abu Sayyaf's head troublemaker is being hunted here in Mindanao, and I have to eat my first balut when I wake up in the morning. So off I go to Pateros, just outside Manila, for my Balut fest. If you haven't eaten fertilized duck embryos, then you haven't lived. They taste like teeny iron-y liver balls with a duck burp on the back end. I need to get to the countryside.
I mean, do you really want to hear anything else about the Manila where there is more sadness, poverty, pollution and traffic than almost any other place in the world that I have ever visited? Or do you want to hear about the Manila where the privileged elites live behind walled compounds with private mercenaries guarding them and spend their days working in high-rise office towers and their afternoons shopping at Prada? Amazing world we live in. I cannot wait to get to Palawan this weekend, an island paradise where rich and poor all share the same realities of daily life. Manila has beaten the pants out of my high spirits. But I digress.
Some things that kept me busy while I sweated out the urban experience:
Jeepneys: Jeepneys are the most popular form of transportation in the Philippines. You hop on, pay the driver based on the distance you will travel, and hop off. Every Jeepney driver tricks out his ride in their own way. My cameraman, Mike, suggested a new reality show that we could do here, Un-Pimp My Ride...The Jeepney style and name are a holdover from the American occupation and the surfeit of Army jeeps that we left behind. Funny, but the Spanish were here for 500 years and you can't find a trace of their footprint anywhere except for a few oddball recipe holdovers and the crumbling walls of Intramuros. The Americans have been here for 60 years, and there are more KFCs per capita than there are back home. Go figure.
Mayors: Mayors are a dime a dozen. There are more office-holding politicians in this country than there are potable water sources, and every town and village we go to insists that the Dept. of Tourism honchos bring us by to get the key to the city and kiss some babies. That is how we start each day.
Worms and Frogs: Crawly stuff are traditional foods here, and a stable source of protein. I ate plenty at the Balaw Balaw restaurant, an artist's gallery and famous eatery in Rizal province. The worms are the size of golf balls. The frogs in the Philippines are afraid of the worms.
Staff Lunch: Staff lunch is shared each day by the whole crew. Often we have a big group with us. Travel and Living Channel is what they call the Travel Channel here, and my show is apparently a big hit. Each day we have more and more people with us, it seems. The Dept. of Tourism keeps telling them where we are and they keep showing up, which is fun because we have gotten our best tips on food from the crew.
Lounge Acts: The lounge act at the Manila Diamond Hotel is called Pepi and MultiVitamin. Imagine Siegfried and Roy's illegitimate step-kids. Filipino lounge acts are so bad, they are great.
Angeles: Angeles is a town that should be avoided at all costs. It used to be the red light district that serviced the American bases here. Now it is rundown and has lost its biggest client, since the United States pulled out. Imagine Sodom and Gomorrah, but one so tawdry and used up that it seems more reminiscent of one of the rings in Dante's Inferno than a place you want to drink and flirt with hookers. It is evil incarnate.
Finally, from the filth, traffic jams and decaying urban sprawl of Manila, we are in the remote island province, Palawan. We fly right into the capital of the province, Puerto Princessa. It feels like the Philippines are supposed to feel ... and look and sound and taste. In fact, the vibe here is straight out of Somerset Maugham's South Pacific short stories ... ever read "Rain"? After years of searching for the sensation that civilization has really ended, I think I found it. The best part is that modern life and some of the comforts we associate with it are in Puerto (like running water), but you can drive 10 minutes and be in the middle wilderness, real tropical wilderness.
It has rained here for a week straight, the effect of Siaopao, the worst typhoon to come through these parts in 50 years. Palawan got the side swipe. China took a direct hit, so we feel lucky. It is still raining when we land, pouring, in a way that the rain only falls in the equatorial climes of Southeast Asia during the rainy season. We are welcomed into this teeny town by a delegation from the local tourism ministry and driven to our hotel. There we wash up, get back in the car and head up the coast to the Badjao Seafront Restaurant.
I would rather eat a meal in a restaurant at the end of the road than at any other type of eatery I can think of. Whether it's a Maine lobster shack, like Five Islands Lobster Company, a beachfront oyster bar in Brittany, a Montauk Point fish house, or a seafood restaurant like the BSR, I am in heaven. The BSR is a mahogany-and-teak raft floating a quarter mile out in the South China Sea, on the edge of a mangrove forest, dripping with wild orchids. The owner, Mrs. Mendoza, knows she has the best joint in town, but works doubly hard keeping it that way. We ate sauteed chicken with lemongrass and banana flower, chili crabs, grilled prawns, roasted tangigue (a mackerel local to the seas here), grilled eggplant in coconut milk with onions and lime, grilled tuna, ceviche, steamed clams and several seaweed salads. We sucked down banana and mango purees made from fruit that was hanging from trees on the property. We grabbed dessert at a local jungle market that caters to the banana pickers and farmers in the town. The ripest fingerling bananas are rolled in coarse locally made brown sugar and wok-fried for about 45 seconds, taken out, rolled again and dunked back in the oil for 30 seconds more. The result is bananas Foster without the snooty waiter and tableside flambe gimmickry.
You gotta' love the Philippines.
im filipino i live in the philippines if u ever go back you have to try their deserts and the fruit is deliciouse.
Hi Andrew! I would like to say I've enjoyed watching your show! especially featuring Philippines. I'm a Filipino and im residing here in north Carolina. I miss Filipino foods. And when while I was watching your show, i found myself getting hungry... salivating. Balut is my favorite. I miss it. I love the soup... yummy! Thank you for featuring philippines. I've been wondering if y'all ever gonna do a show there, and at least you did! Take care!
hi!! i think it is really wonderful that you went to the Philippines and actually tried our foods. I live in Pasadena, Ca now and truly miss our foods and to see this episode and just be reminded of things was just really wonderful. i think what you are doing is awesome. i havent even tried most of what youve had, but hey, you tried balut!!! thats one of my favorites. and also the side street foods. great job on your show!!
My son has been living in the Philippines for the last two years and there are so few shows on the Philippines. Your show was fun, and so informative. I really got a feel for my poor son and some of the horrible foods he has to eat. Thanks for doing such a fun show.
i've been watching bizarre foods since it first aired... thank you for making me heel HOMESICK! I WANNA GO BACK HOME NOW!
Thank you very much Andrew, wife and I enjoy your show!! I am 1/2 filipino, and only lived there for 1 year (born on a military base). I have spoken with my mom about going back, and after watching this show, I really want to go back to see where I cam from. Not sure about the some of those foods, but willing to try....maybe..Soup #5.......
Great episode! I'm Filipino but was born in the U.S. I haven't even tried all the dishes featured on the show! Good for you for being so brave!
Glad you tried the balut. I love those chicken intestines! Yummy! Hey-the red watch-is it Tag Heuer? Does it have a rubber strap.
I've eated a fertalized duck egg before, and it was pretty gross because once I got past the egg white I found a duck head with redish eyes.I think the duck was too old to eat, so I gave the remains to my doggy :)
Great show! You've inspired me to try out bizarre foods myself. I'm a Filipino and I love the way you described cheese and purple yam ice cream on hamburger buns. It's so common for us that I didn't realize how strange a combination it is!
Love your episode on the Philippines. I just got back from a trip there and went to a food market in Manila. I saw so many strange food there - goat heads, ox tails, but as you said, gotta love the Philippines!
First of all, i'd like to say that your show is awesome..I am so thankful that you went to the philippines. I got teary-eyed when you were eating Balut. Balut looks gross but it taste so good. Watching your show made me even more proud that i'm a filipino. Filipino's are very hospitable and because of poverty we learned to be efficient and we appreciate all the things that we have..I love being pinoy!
Im just wondering why it takes so long to get a new show on tv? I love your show and wish there was a new one every week. Please do more!
After drinking pond scum and having raw pig testicles, you balked at durian?!? :-) Love you, love your show, love your job!
Hey Andrew, Love the show! I was just in Manila. I left 2 days after you arrived. I think that you do a great job and I love seeing all the different cultures. I too am a Chef. I was wondering what it would take to get a job on the show as staff. It is something that I am really interested in. You have inspired me. Keep up the great work. Nick
Hi Andrew, I've watched your show on the Phillipines. Boy oh boy I do admire you're curiosity and courage on tasting some of my homeland's cuisine. I hope in the future you'll go back there. Try Cebu and the other parts of the Visayas. Trust me you have only tasted a quarter of what the country has to offer. There is a dish made out of pig's blood and innard's, pig's testicle soup and most of all Durian!!!! Love your show.
Hi Andrew! Thanks so much for the feature on the Philippines. My fiance & I plan to go to the Philippines in 2009. I've told him about Palawan, so it was great to see it on your show. I'm an American born filipina & my parents let my fiance try balut. The soup is the best part, I think! You're bold - thanks for trying the different stuff - Gave us some motivation to try more! Now you know why there are never filipinos on Fear Factor!!! ha ha ha... Happy & Safe Travels! Cee & Mike
Andrew, I would like you to do a show in Thailand. The food is aroi (delicious).
Hi Andrew, You are the BEST ever! love that show, you are so brave to taste all that kinds of bizzare foods. I advise you to go to Cebu, the best and oldest City in Philippines. Lots of good bizzarre foods. Good Luck
Hi Andrew; Me and my wife love your show. We always watch it together and we have you on lock on our DVR... But next time your in Cebu City or Butuan City let me know. I can have my family show you around... Once again thank you for a very very entertaining show and you have become a very popular personnality at my house...
Hi! I am a Filipino! I thought you tried all kinds of bizarre foods already but you have not tried the famous "dog adobo" delicacy in Luzon. Now, that's what you call BIZARRE!!
can't belive you included durian as a wierd or bizarre food , i am a americam living in thailand and durian is the kink of fruit here everyone from the usa and other countries that come for a visit love it i personly never heard anyone say they don't like it , and the smell is not that bad and taste a little like bananas to me , hope you give it another try, and in the us a you can buy frozen in the asian stores thanks for bolg and my kids in america told me about your show malcolm
Hello Andrew, Love the episode on Trinidad and Tobago. Thnaks for trying our foods. We have been living in the US for 21 years and even though we cook the foods you had all the time we still felt home-sick while watching the episode. I would love to send you my recipe for shark and bake. Once you are eating that sandwich you will feel like you are back at Maracas beach liming. Keep up the fablous work. Thanks, Nisa ~
Great show! My wife is Filipino and we go there every year. You have inspired me to try out Everybodys Cafe next month for some frogs and crikets! However, Ill probably stick to fried chicken and spaghetti the rest of the trip.
Andrew, You rock dude! I love your show. I'm impressed with your style of communicating the food, the people and the culture. I hope you continue doing what you do. Eat hardy! lh
WOW! My wife is from Manila.I went there with her for our honeymoon and tried a few items you featured. Of course, my wife tried ALL of them and wishes she was on that trip! PS: The show was the BEST!
Hi Andrew, I like watching your show it's really entertaining.I am so happy that finally someone featured my country. I sure missed it a lot minus the worms and etc...I hope they can feature my country more but anyways more power to you and your show. YOU ARE REALLY BRAVE!!!!!
I love your show, especially the one that was done in the Philippines. After I saw the show, I traveled there for vacation and it truly is beautiful. I tried balut and fried baby chicks. Most all my meals were in the local open market, yummmmmmm.
Very good show about Philippnes. I am so surprised that Philippines was featured in your show. Thanks to you. I am a Filipina, born and raised there but now currently living here in the US. I agree about almost everything you said about our food and I am happy that you like most of it although I dont eat everything that you have tried. Most of our food is influenced by Spanish and Chinese. You havent tried our Lechon Baboy (Roasted Whole Pig)and Lechon Manok (Roasted Chicken) and our famous Chicken Inasal or Chicken Barbeque, Lapaz Batchoy, etc. I hope Philippines will be featured again in other Travel Channel shows.
Hi Andrew, I have to say I really enjoy watching your show and hearing of the foods that folks eat around the world. I have to take exception with the segment about Durian. During my many trips to Cambodia, I have nicknamed it "stinky fruit" and try to steer clear of the markets that sell it. But I do know that you did your viewers a disservice because once you get past the smell, the actual flesh is quite tasty. That is, if you can get past the smell. When you spit it out, I don't believe you gave the fruit a fair shake. Especially, with all the other Asian fare that you have had. Keep up the travels and I look forward to more of your exotic victuals. Sincerely Pat
Hallo Andrew! Thank you so much for visiting the Philippines, every word you have written are true and I agree with you, I am from Mindanao and have live in Cebu for a long time and now I am in Germany, thank you for posting some realistic happenings in the Philippines. Bravo Andrew...
Hiya Andrew! Dude your show's so entertaining, i try not to miss an eppy; missed the one of the Philippines (my hometown)...I read you ate duck embryo, ewwy my Mom forced fed that to us when we were kids and i know i've ate what i had to eat and left it there during my childhood (no more for me)...You have guts to try these foods, but i'm kinda scared for your health; i know most of the food you consume is hella bad for the body-take care of yourself always and be safe on your bizarre journeys...Lots of luck on your show, thanks for showing us the other side of the cuisine.
commenting on an older show - surely by now you know neeps in Scotland are turnips or rutabagas as we call them in the southern US. How can you mistake peas for this root veggie?
Good Morning Andrew, my name is Kevin Sparks. You did an episode here in Alaska on reindeer pizza. I am the manager of Uncle Joes Pizzeria and I would like a copy of the unedited tape for my family, if possible. It was a pleasure to have met you and your crew. Thank you in advance and safe journeys for you all
One word...BALUT!!!
Hi Andrew!! I'm so happy that you visited the Philippines... And good thing you were brave enough to try the balut (Sucking the juice out is best the moment a small crack appears) and then isaw (chicken intestines barbeque style..) but you tried the fried version... and then I don't know if you got to try qwek qwek (quail eggs... with.. hmm I forgot what was around it) I miss those!! I also miss Tupig... Pinapaitang Kambing (goat with bitter soup) and Tinubong (rice paste placed inside bamboo then buried in heated pits...) to eat it you have to whack the bamboo on the cement or something to crack it.. that's sold in Vigan! I hope next time you'd go and visit the Philippines again.. you can email me because i havr family whi can tour you around and even serve you Pinapaitang Kambing... fresh!!
Hello Mr. Andrew, my name is Cesar and I am Chilean I live in the city but remote of the planet called PUNTA ARENAS, and from here with my family we continue through of television for cable all the chapters of his amusing and cultural program, we are very grateful of what you teach us through of television and we invite it so that some day this for these lands also carrying out a program for everybody, here you rot to savor everything classes of meats and shellfish, we invite it to know this distant earth finally of the world cesar

Anyway on your next trip to the philippines you gotta eat black dog!!! i cant believe you visited the p.i. and never ate black dog!!! well anyway let me know when you try it. take care and eat on!!! karl-ryan of kaneohe hawaii!! by the way im still serious of joining you in your bizzare food adventures!!
Hi Andrew! I'm been watching yur show. I'm glad you visited the Philippines. I'm from the Philippines, and now lived here in Kansas. Anyways, what was your most unforgettable experience there? Any favorite foods? I know there are some stuff that I don't remember eating when I was growing up, but you should try more of our sweets & pastries. Good luck!
Hello Andrew! My name's Aarti, born and brought up in Kenya, Africa, originally from an Indian heritage. Am currently in the USA, Texas and want to let you know I absolutely love your show! I was vegetarian for 2 years , but after being introduced to your show, I surprisingly discovered a new side of me that wants to eat as much "bizarre food" as possible! Your next place to visit should be Africa, where the Masai drink Blood instead of water! Keep up the awesome work!
I haven't seen the episode of the Philippines. Hopefully I will see it soon. The Philippines is a great place where everyone is friendly. I don't know why people keep saying to try black dog or anything that has to do with a dog because it's outlawed in the Philippines, unless that's in the Southern Muslim Region of the Philippines. Up north of Manila is where most Roman Catholics are located. I doubt they eat dog. The myths about Filipinos eating dog is probably wrong. Visit places up North where it's safe. The Philippines is the best. The traditional dishes like palabok, chicken adobo, pancit, and desserts like halo-halo, and so many other foods are great to eat in the Philippines and the beaches are the best.
Hi Andrew, I do enjoy watching your show. If ever you come back to Manila, I like to meet you.
Hello Andrew, I am a filipino, born and raised in Mindanao. I live in Cagayan de Oro City, its most peaceful place.I am so impressed with your article in this blog. I am now living in the US, married with an american, and how we love your show (never miss any). I wish you have visited in Mindanao. There are more bizarre foods that await you there. It's not that dangerous at all, my husband and his parents made it to visit my hometown. Anyway, more power to you and your show. We are glad you got interest in making a show about our country. My beloved country is still poverty-stricken, with people crabby of the minute economic opportunity it has. Spanish left us nothing but their latin names, old buildings, and some of the words we speak as part of our language, which you can mostly hear from Visayas and Mindanao regions. Foods of these regions have also great influence of Spanish cooking. On one hand, I wish you had tried roasted bat in Mindanao, and this pork's blood soup we call Dinuguan.
Andrew, I'm a Filipina who lived in Minnesota for almost 22 years. My father was a lawyer and migrated here. They lived in Rochester,MN. Thank you for going to the Philippines for Travel Channel and tried their bizarre foods which i haven't tried except the balut. My husband was born & raised here in USA (caucasian) and my daughter tried the balut. They loved it!!! They said it taste like hard boiled eggs. Thank you for doing a show about the Philippine bizarre foods. Everyone loved you down there. You're like a Superstar!!! Wow!!!! My family went this Summer to the East Coast. I love New York !!! It was awesome! (I puzzled know why Mid-westerners don't like it!) I was in heaven !!! Love you & your family, Daisy Fallarme-Wallenmeyer
Hi Andrew - I love your show! I was born in the Philippines and am pretty sure that you and your staff were truly given a sample of the Filipino hospitality when did your show. Filipinos will do anything to make you feel at home, even though we are a poor country. More power to your show!
Hi Andrew - I just love your show! The Philippines may be a poor country but the Filipinos have a big heart when it comes to visitors. We are known for our tremendous hospitality. I am glad to see that you tried the balut! What a delicacy it is! More power to your show!
Hey Lynn, I loved the Dinuguan, sometimes we shoot a scene with food that never makes it into the final show. And regarding that, I've eaten my fill in Thailand and didn't find any on our visit to the P.I. last year. Maria, we were treated so graciously by everyone we met, I can safely say that the people that we hung out with were the kindest and most welcoming we have encountered in our travels.
Hi Andrew, My wife and I truly enjoy your show every Monday. We are both came from the Philippines. I missed the episode you did from the Philippines. I want to know how I can order a copy of it. Filipinos have a lot of food to offer. You should come back and do another episode. Regards, Pete E. Casino Detroit,MI
Hi Andrew, My wife and I enjoyed your show a lot. Unfortunately we missed the episode you did in the Philippines. How can I order a copy of it? We are both from the Philippines. Filipinos have a lot of food that you can feature in your show. Please do another episode of the Philippines (food). Regards, Pete E. Casino Detroit, MI
I enjoyed your trinidad and tobago show. bake nd shark are my favorite too.................
Really love your show, especially your episodes showcasing the Asian region and the Paradise Philippines. Keep it up!
Hi Andrew! I loved your show that featured the Philippines. I'm a Filipina who grew up here in the U.S. I'm getting ready to go back and bring my American boyfriend with me. He was a bit scared of the food you ate, but I told him that we have other delicious food that he could try. He's a bit skeptical especially of the balut. Thanks for the blog as well; he learned a lot just reading from it. I'm really excited to take him "home" with me and to experience where I came from. Best wishes and be careful with your other trips!
*"the more terrible a dish looks, the more neutraling its taste." (as you eat the live tree bark worms dipped in lemon juice) *"they only call certain food an aphrodisiac as a way of getting you to it eat." (as you sampled soup #5--otherwise known as the balls and butt of the cow soup) Verrrry Funny. I just caught the show last night for the first time. Glad you enjoyed Balut. I also find it honest and interesting to read your blog post on the trip. On the show, you seemed to have embraced the philippines wholeheartedly--but I thought it was good to see that you were not blind to what the country's ills are--you were just accepting and accomodating at the moment. (a trait every person traveling and visiting other cultures should possess.) Seeing this show made my mouth water. Thanks for including the philippines. ~chesca
hello and mabuhay love your show about the philippines, but you miss a lot of food you need to do one more show, especially in pampanga you've missed their native dish called "buro" fish, crab or rice which is fermented and buried in special clay for days or months before consuming it. Try as well merienda foods llike halo-halo, lugaw, palabok, malabon.. There are loads so you need to do another episode. Thanks and Good luck
hey there andrew, my little daughter and i really look forward tomondays.waiting patiently for your show to come on. its really great you got the chance to visit our native country but i think for the delicacies you have shown were just a few. you must dig deeper you know. i think there is so much more to explore and of course taste. but just the same , more power to your show and godbless you and your family.... eric camacho
Andrew, I enjoyed your show about the Philippines... thank you for focusing on the good things. You are right about the poverty and sadness, but unlike other western media, focusing on the positive things is a refreshing change. The country needed a boost from a string of negative publicity during the past years. Safe travels... Ben
Wow, what a show, i have been to the Philippines and hope to go again next year, i was handed Balut, but turned it down, maybe now i will try some!!! If you are brave enough, you can come and some of my wifes cooking.... take care and keep up the good shows.. Kieran, UK.
Andrew, your bizarre food trip to PI is awesome. Make sure you come back for more unique food tasting back there like the barbecue innards of chickens. You will love them too. You made filipinos heart closer to you because of this show. Happy comeback to one of the happy country in the world the Philippines!!!
There's one dish I'm afraid you missed, Andrew. "Mata ng baka" (cow's eyes) cooked in rice porridge. :)
I love your show. It's awesome that you have the guts to try all the weird food around the world. MABUHAY
Andrew.. I loveeeeeeee your show... very much..i love your courage and guts eating all those bizarre - weird food.... take care
Saw your show from the Philippines when it first aired her in SJC. I'm a Filipino and saw the great/strange items that made Manila... Manila. Love it! Made me miss home more and more and more... Great shows, pls try to do another show from Manila, there are more than balut that the Philippines are known for "exquisite food". MABUHAY!!!
Hi Andrew! Please do come back and visit the other island dishes. Try also sisig, bulalo, chicken inasal and kinilaw! Love watching your show. :-) Cheers, Claire
Hello Andrew, Just wanted to say that I tried the Durian fruit and at first I was unsure how to handle it but now I am more comfortale with eating the fruit. I actually like it. The place in the Philippines where you can get the Durian fruit is in Davao, the Durian capital of the Philippines. Love your shows. Oh yeah, you must try to octopus adobo or the kinilaw.
hi andrew! i love your show! i live here in the philippines. i would like to suggest that you should also visit some parts of the philippines, my province perhaps? im from the province of bikol(southern part of the island of luzon,45 minutes plane ride from manila) & we offer lots of good delicacies here. hope you'll come back & visit my country again. Good luck to your show!
Hi Andrew! Just saw the Philippine episode last night and i must say i enjoyed watching it! I personally liked the ice cream on the hamburger bun part. Hahaha! It was fun to watch how amazed you were. Was laughing the whole time. I like how you do the show, very entertaining. I so enjoyed watching you eating some of the bizarre stuff our country can offer. I know its just a fraction of what you could have eaten of the Filipino delicacies and im hoping that you can go back again and check some of our famous foods per provinces. It may not be on the show but please come back maybe when you are thinking of having a vacation here and try to sample the best of the foods we have. You are always welcome in the Philippines anytime! By the way, take care on each travel! Good health! Best show!
Hi Andrew, Welcome to the Philippines! I really love your show. It gives me a lot of insights with other countries culture, beliefs and their way of living. Your show is really great. Anyways, can I make a request? Is it possible for you try a tamilok? I heard that its Palawan's specialty. It is a woodworm that eats on mangrove wood. They say that it taste like oyster, though I haven't tried it. =) More power to your show and enjoy your stay. Mabuhay! Regards, Mich
Dear Andrew, Your episode on the Philippines was just aired last Wednesday here in the Philippines only last Wednesday, September 19. Your program premiered last September 5 with the Morocco episode. I was so thrilled that you featured our country as the 3rd episode. As one commented, you have tasted only 1/4 of the bizzarre foods of the Philippines! If in Morocco, you have eaten lambs raw, then here we also have raw goat eaten fresh! You haven't also eaten "lumpiang sariwa", "fried bayawak", our aromatic rice coffee, "kwek-kwek, "halo-halo", crab paste, "bagoong alamang", "nilasing na hipon" (shrimp eaten alive) to name a few. So I hope you come back and really go to Visayas and Mindanao since you only went to the Luzon islands. My deep appreciation for you featuring our country. SALAMAT!
Hi, Andrew I am a filipina, born and raised in Philippines but I already move here in GA, love your show!!!! specially in Philippines,,, oh men I miss PH.. oh it was really wierd when you eat those live worms... I never did that...but you gotta try visit in visayas,.. there's a lot of bazzare foods there. try to attend sinulog in cebu its a famous festival there and thers a lot of food that I could say only in Phillipines!!!!
andrew, super show!i'm a former navy cook/baker from philadelphia.wife from thailand.we invite you to our home in pattaya thailand for great tasting durian!(apr-july)best season.wife says you may be eating over ripe durian, hence bad taste. join our large family for thai dishes. my wife and i commute philadelphia to pattaya to see our family.(cheesesteaks and scrapple to ant eggs and durian) join us! happy trails!
men andrew i was so wow on your show specially featuring my country (philippines)i have said OH MYgod for 10 times because u featured the philippines.
Hi Andrew, I see that many people here have listed some of the dishes here that's more common I think. If you ever go back to the Philippines, you should also visit Alaminos, Pangasinan and see the local markets there. There's always fresh seafood, fruits, desserts...a whole variety of other things. There's also the Hundred Islands in Lucap, which you'd have to travel by boat (from what I'm told by my parents). Hopefully you'll get to do another episode there, in another part of the country :) Take care.
PLEASE if you ever visit the philippines again, YOU MUST GO TO THE VISAYAS! The visayas is a totally different world from manila! I am from Negros Oriental, Dumaguete City and i know you will enjoy the visayas very much! The scenery is amazing and there is plenty other bizarre foods to choose from!
I love your show. I watch every chance I get. You are one brave soul.I could never eat some of the stuff you do but it's very etertaining to watch you. Thank you.
Hi Andrew, My American friend from Boston clued me in about your show on the Philippines. I'm looking forward to see it. I watch your show whenever I can.You went to Luzon and Palawan and ate some bizare foods, however you haven't been to Ilocos where dog is the local delicacy and to Davao where crocodiles are on the daily menu. You have yet to try Dinuguan which is boiled pig's blood and pork meat or squid cooked in its own ink. I hope you come back soon and do another episode on the Philippines and its even more bizare foods. Keep up the great work.
Hi! My Hispanic husband and I (Filipina) are always watching your show. But we missed the one from the Philippines. His family were the ones who told us about your episode there. They were so impressed about how we were able to eat those dishes/delicasies of course, specially the balut. And now, they were also able to see our place, food and culture. Thank you for going there and I hope you'll do a PART 2 due to increasing public demand! You'll never know what else is waiting for you in there. It is just the tip of the iceberg! More power to your show!
hi andrew love your show specially the one from the philippines. i am married to a filipino from Benguet province(northern part of the philippines)and they have this dish that you should try they call it pinikpikan, they beat the chicken, then burn it feathers and all, then make a soup out of it. it is really yummy. if you can't make it to the philppines come to florida where we at, my husband cooks it all the time. happy travel!
I always watch your show and watching you eating our foods back in my country is of course became my favorite episode. I miss our food but I can't eat some of the things you've tried. I remember the big worms you've tried, when I was young an uncle of mine used to eat that raw. I never thought about that till I see this episode. Anyway, keep up the good work..you never cease to amaze me. I just love your show..enjoy your next meal.
just wanna say good job!im from the Philippines and i enjoyed the show, but trust me you havent even tasted half of the bizzare foods we offer, maybe you need to go back and do a part 2 and i could be your tour guide this time....so long my friend!
Hi Andrew! Pongki here from the Philippines! Love your show so much! Watchin it eveyweek!! Keep up the good work!!
Hi Andrew, we really love ur show! and thank you for having the guts on eating those so called...exotic foods. my daughter used to love Balut (when she was still in the Phil.) she eat Balut piece by piece, but now, she's been here in US for almost 15 yrs. she say's she don't know if she could eat balut anymore. by the way, More power to your show and Gob Bless
Dude! You got some serious guts (would've used another term but not sure if it's acceptable here) in you! I couldn't even watch while you're eating some of them things! (honestly, I didn't even know they existed and I am a Filipino!!! - shame on me, I know) Just so you know, that show was amazing, you are amazing and I love you for that!
I really enjoyed the show on the Philippines. My girl friend lives in Cebu and I told her about the show and the different things you tried. Now she is going to take me to try her favorite street foods on my next visit. Wish me luck.
Being from Palawan, I don't know if i really enjoyed your show for the most part.I understand people eating live giant worms may increase tv ratings but trust me the Philippines has alot more to offer.
hi andrew,i enjoy your show . i wounder if you are familiar with chaldean food . we have some bizarre recipes and food dated to ancient babylonean or (sumer). since the arameac written language was only used by church our language was only spoken by chaldeans, there for these recipes were never written until recent history in arabic .watching my mother cooking i learned these recipes, as she learned from her mother i am sure that you will love our babylonean food just for having an adventuroue soul ..love nadia.
I didn't know that you've aired that segment about the Philippines before but I liked it when it aired last Wednesday. Personally, I haven't tried many of those food you tried that I, too, consider unusual (or bizarre). I love balut that your guide said to have been incubated for exactly 18 days. I don't know if it's still true today, but years ago there were two kinds being sold - the regular balut with the chick already well formed and the Balut-sa-Puti (sa puti means in white), which is balut with the chick not as old as the regular ones. On the subject of balut, we can enjoy balut here in the US, thanks to the Vietnamese who sell them in groceries in Westminster CA and also in Colonial Ave in Orlando FL. I don't know if they have them in other places. I know a Vietnamese store here in Miami that sells them too.
Andrew, I'm a Filipino. My family enjoy watching your show and were so glad for going to our native land and tasting the bizarre food we have to offer It makes me homesick and crave for Filipino food. Keep up the good work. God bless.
hi. I really love your show. I havent tried some of the foods that u show. Cant wait to try some of it.Good luck.
I am a BIG FAN of yours. I am also a watch fanatic and would like to know the brand name and model of the red band watch you wear on your show. Thanks for a great show and keep it up. Good Luck.
great show. I am now home sick
THE BEST TV SHOW EVER!!! PERIOD!! I LOVE THIS GUY,HE'S FUNNY AND AWESOME!
im a kapampangan who love your show, and who'd like to say a few things about Angeles City (my hometown) Minus all the crappy stuff (traffic, badroad, hookers), Angeles is a food haven. we're best known for our sisig festival and kare-kare (ox viand). we also have great cassave cake, maja blanca's and halo-halos'! hope you'd give our town a second chance. you won't regret it :)
hi andrew! i have watched that episode on the philippines a few times. i just miss the food. the bar food alone is bizarre food. every region has its version of bizarre food and local/regional brew. btw, it is "bat and ball" not back and ball that goes into a soup no. 5. i don't know what happened to soup nos. 1-4...
You're such a cowboy Andrew! Nice guts you have! More power to your show!
Hi, I'm from the Philippines! I recommend the next time you come over, have lunch at any white sand beach, near the sea, and include green mango salad, liempo barbeque, grilled mussels, and steamed prawns on the menu...it's not bizarre but it's really good! Me and my friends really enjoy watching your show! We talk about the food you eat each week and share our thoughts about them...my aunt thinks you're handsome! she's single!
Andrew, I love your show! Im a food enthusiast. I enjoy every minute of your show. It was nice that you feature the Philippines. I am a Filipino. I dont eat balut, but after watching you,I tried it. Keep up the good work! Hope you could go back here!!!
Hello Andrew! I love your show and your blog - very entertaining! Good for you for trying out Balut and for visiting the island of Palawan. I don't eat Balut but I travel a lot around the Philippines. Cheers! CJ David http://christopherjohndavid.blogspot.com
If you made a video/DVD of all this, I would like to know if it is available and the price. I was in Manila Jan. 2004 but no I did not try the food. At 70 years old then I felt it might not be safe for me to change my diet. When they took me to the buffet to see if I wanted to try anything there at Jade Vine Inn in Ermita, I was a bit concerned if I wouldn't affect my teeth as well. All would need strong teeth for chewing etc. Thank you, Ms Pat
Dear Andrew, Had I known that you'll be shooting here in the Philippines, I should've taken a leave from work so I could also follow you around, he he! Frankly, I was so happy that you visited our country again. And I love watching the Philippine episode over and over again. You're just simply very brave, eating our famous balut. And I think you could never say that you've been to our country if you hadn't eaten balut : ) I'm sure that you enjoyed your visit here in our beautiful country and I hope you could visit us again and do another episode here. There's a lot more to discover in the Philippines, you know...
hi andrew, i love your show. the next time (we insist that there'll be one) you visit the philippines, please skip the tourism officials. it will make your life a lot easier and foot tastier. and bring your buddy bourdain, too :) noel
Andrew! You Rock! If ever you're planning to come back to the Philippines, try visit Cebu. It's the Queen City of the South. God bless.
hi Andrew,I love watching your show and it was really nice of you to flew to my homeland and did a show. Hope you enjoyed it there and when you comes back, try our best traditional desserts too :D
Mangrove Worms are interesting to me. With so many people starving in the world how can we ignore such an easy, FRESH, food. Please tell me more about grubs and worms. I'm hungry for knowledge, and FRESH grub.
Hi Andrew! My fiance' and I just love your show. We look forward to Mondays for your show. I love how you tried the ice cream with the hamburger bun..my dad eats that all the time and I used to think he was crazy..but I guess it's a filipino thing. Good luck with your show! Safe travels!
i was dissapointed watching the asia episode without you not having tried balut. but you did this time! i think its really good and other people should try it.

Hi Andrew, I am from hispanic decent and my fiance is Filipino. We love watching your show. We didn't know that you came to the Philippines already. We are hoping if you can show it to the travel channel again so we could watch it, if not you can go back there and have a new episode about the Philippines. It's been a year now since you last visited the Philppines anyway. It would be another experience for you and also we could watch you again with all the weird foods of the Philippines. Take care and we love you.
Please come and visit the Philippines again. We love your show!!
hello there Andrew i have a fiancee in mindanao and there is alot of funky food there also, most foreigners have a saying,,,after you drink a sanmigel beer all the food taste great,,,awsome show keep up the good work
i'm filipino-chinese, and i was born in the philippines, and have been living here in manila since birth.. and i have tried balut, and will never ever eat that poor little duckling that stares at you in the face again. kudos to you mr zimmern :)
Oh Mr. Andrew Zimmern, I absolutely adore your show, I was born in the PI but grew up in the US, having a pinay for a mother is great, I've eaten every single thing that has been put on my plate then some. I respect that you try different foods, and show respect for different cultures, I positively abhor people that say something is disgusting without trying it first. Although I admire your work, watch out because here I come, and I can guarantee I can eat the things you barely try (and like it!)Unlike the Rachael Rays and Samantha Browns, I'm not scared to rough it up and eat it all. It's about time they get a gal to do something only the men seem to think they're capable of
andrew love your show my idea is for advertizing.we need you to randomly keep showing up in the gieco commercials with the lizzard and do a little toung and cheek.just keep up the good work
Andrew I was over seas in the navy. You missed the best part of the Phillipines. Olongapo City the best for food. Dog, cat, chilled and fresh monkey brains. I have eaten everything you have eaten in the Japan, Thailand,Taiwan,Africa,Phillipines, and Austrailia. Plus MORE! I love your show and I would love to go with you to some of these countries for an eating challenge. By the way. Do You Have Aflac?
Hi Andrew! I am currently watching your new show aired 10 pm pacific time. I am so glad you went to visit the Phillippines and ate balut! You're awesome! Try quail eggs next time when you go there. They're yummy!
I think your show is disgusting and should not be allowed to air.
hi andrew your show is amazing it gives everyone a glimpse of what's what we ignore and it's real and alive with our world, anyway how can i get a dvd of your show only about phillipines my mom is asking that for a gift? thank you
Hi Andrew. I watch your show here in Houston Tx but never had the chance to watch the Philippines episode yet. I miss the Philippines. We just got back last month. I never tried all those those bizarre foods you've eaten but I recommend yo try our other delicious foods as well... More power to your show. You are one hell of a dude !
My wife of 20+ years is from the Phillippines and I love her cooking, yes I have had Balut (hint) yout suppose to crack either end of shell then drink the juice then finnish taking the rest of the shell off then then shoving the whole thing in your mouth.Next time your there look for thier version of ketchup. It's called Bannana Catsup it's well diffrent,my wife when we first met made me spagetti with this and had hot dogs instead of meatballs.Love you show bur you need to get to the islands around the Phillippine Like Cebu and Mindeno to take it the sites and different foods.Wish I could go with you.
Hi Andrew, i'm a filipina from philippines of course, thanks for featuring our homeland that was very exciting and fun, specially when you showed up my favorite one "BALUT" definitely you made me drools and felt homesick once more, I live here in Iowa and experiencing "cold cuts struggles" (means, tired of eating raw vegetables, corns, ice cream desserts, and sliced bread...I could only eat seafoods when we go do the city "Des Moines" where there's some few oriental restaurants and stores...but the heck...there is still no place like HOME!
Love your show, Andrew. Being a Filipino living in the US for the past 8 years, I really appreciate people like you who get to feature stuff from back home. Reading your blog, I have to say I appreciate your candidness and honesty. And, no, I will not tell you you're wrong about anything you wrote about. You were an impartial and objective observer, and you are entitled to express your views about them. The only thing I hate about your show is the way my appetite grows as I watch more of it. I envy your job. Can I be an understudy? Just kidding! I'm lucky I can cook some of the recipes I learned from my grandmother, so I don't miss home too much. More power to you, and please keep on with your travels. I want to learn more about the world, and your gastronomic tours have been nothing but a great help.
hello Andrew, great show! you should try to see BATANES island next time, i was born there...
hey, andrew! i'm a huge fan of your show and i truly love it! i'm from laguna, philippines and i wish you tasted our duck egg bibingka in santa cruz as well as duck innards adobo. i know you will love it. God Bless You and your show.

I loved the show so much that I plan on visiting the Philippines. Where is the largest night market in the Philippines that was on the show? Aloha from sunny Honolulu, Hawaii!
I am a big fan of yours and must say I am very happy you featured my country. I hope you get to visit it again and get to explore other sides of the Philippines (Northern part like Ilokos) and try their delicacies (bagnet, bagoong, etc) and find the Spanish influence that you may not have really seen when you first visited. Or go to Cebu/Boracay/Dumaguete and Bohol.. ...More power to your show, more bizarre foods to eat. Enjoy!!
I am married to a Philipina, would like to get a tape of your travels to the country, also there foods, i saw rhe segma on Tv-on 08/18/08-Travel channel-please let me know if i can purchased the tape of the Phillipines.Thank you95624

Stumbled on your YouTube videos while looking for swordfish. Imagine that! Am a migrant who still returns every other year. Live in a Chicago suburb and though the lake makes for good sailing, I miss the smell of the sea. As for Palawan, you're correct. That's where I intend to retire. No old people's home for me. I've been in one of those and they freaked me out! Enjoyed your videos! And I admire your gastronomical guts, man!
Mr. Andrew I saw your NY episode last night and you were eating durian. I heard you say you've eaten one just like it so i figured you've been to the philppines and i was right!
i'm a native of cebu. its sad you did not visit cebu. you could have liked it and i am sure of that.
you haven't tried "balut ala pobre" or the "sizzling balut" as what it is called now. its way yummy, grilled in butter without the shell of course and has corns and peas side dish on it. come to cebu mr. zimmern
OMG!!!! Watching Bizarre Foods gave me a new look at how my wife cooks.... My wife is a filippina and I have seen such meals that I just wouldn't eat.... But to her this meals are wonderful.... Once while in the Marines a friend of mine while over seas purchased a small puppy for the kids..... He later went off to Korea for a deployment for two weeks when he returned he noticed that the puppy was gone.. When he asked her where was the puppy she exclaimed "what puppy, you mean the one you brought home for dinner two weeks ago?".... My wife also said she have had had dog a meal while in the philippines... She stated that they raise the puppy until it is six months old feeding it only rice until it is ready to be eatten... The day before it is killed they feed it lots of rice and after they killed it they stick wooden straws into the stomach to drink the contents out which is said to be like a alcoholic beverage...... Can you top that?
MAN i loved your show in the philippines.i was stationed there in the 80's."Marine Barracks".loved the duty, especially loved all the great food.Balut is even better when you have a red horse chaser.enjoy your show.theres not much in the p.i. that isnt good.mabuhay

"THE BEST SHOW EVER" Thank you Mr.Andrew Zimmern for visiting our country (PHILIPPINES)and to show to all the people in the world how nice the philippine is.More POWER TO YOUR SHOW AND GOD BLESS YOU ASND YOUR FAMILY.!!!
"REMEMBER IF IT LOOKs GOOD EAT IT" Mr.Andrew pls go back to philippines and make new episode there huhuhu i miss my country. GOD BLESS!!!
Can you re run the Philippines episode. Thank you.
I'm from Angeles City and I didn't like your comment that you should avoid Angeles at all cost. I watched Anthony B No reservation and he went to Angeles and He like it. You can avoid the red light district in balibago. But you should try eating the specialty restaurant. Next time you visit email me and I will prepare Azucena, burung talangka, adobong bayawak, kaldaretang aso, adobong kamaru, and fried tui.
When I watched the episode featuring it, I was surprised and thought it would take ages for the Philippines to be featured. Watching that episode made me proud to be a Filipino. And I was happy that you liked some of the food that the country can offer. Maybe if you can visit again try the dinuguan with puto especially if the dinuguan is a bit spicy. :)
Hi Andrew!
thanks for featuring our beautiful country. You haven't experience a lot of the Philippines yet. There is still a lot that our country can offer. Each off it's 7,107 island has it's own thing to be proud of. Festivities, ethnic groups, landscapes, seascapes and of course a variety of foods and local cuisine.
Each province in the Philippines has it's own range of local dishes to experience. it's a good thing you had a taste of Pampangan cuisine. But that's not all it. Iloilo, Bacolod, and Cebu in Visayas has great Visayan foods and Davao is famous in Mindanao.
The Philippines is a very beautiful country. Come and visit us often and we will show you what the Philippines got. We love to share it with you!
Salamat sa pagbisita!(Thank You for visiting!)
G'day there Andrew,
Thanks and appreciation for promoting my birth country's attributes....and "bizarre" quirks =) Though I think you missed out on one unique Filipino dish that has been a little known, and well liked, institution....Taho. Made from fermented soybean paste mixed with sago balls and a sweet molasses-style syrup. You can get them from street vendors roaming the suburban & regional neighbourhoods....look out for the guy carrying a distinctive pair of silver drum-like containers slung on each end of a stick or flat bar shouting "tahoooo!!!" Even found these vendors combing White Beach in Boracay when I went on holiday there recently.....mmm yummm! It's evn available in a couple of stores in selected Manila shopping centres.
If you want a quick "breakfast of champions" while on the go, or even just a simple snack, this is the stuff to have. Check out this website as well for a bit more detail: http://www.tahoonline.info/
Gee if they had this served at Manila airport, it'd be the first thing I'll have after arriving for another visit. Enjoy! ;-P
I envy you Andrew. I was 45 years old when I left the Philippines for USA and lived in Mindanao for 19 years but never had the chance to visit Palawan.
Andrew, I hope you'll try to go back to the Philippines, go to BICOL. The food is very exotic and bizzare!!! Love it!!!
I saw your show on Youtube about the food in our country and thanks for visiting our country. My request is go visit again the Philippines ( Our food has so much to offer than those) Visit Visayas and Mindanao for more bizzare and super delicious Filipino food...
