Survivor

Welcome to the final blog and final episode of Bizarre Foods.* What a great choice for subject matter as well. Take one 240 pound, 47 year old, hypochondriacal Jewish New Yorker and drop him in a jungle for 48 hours and see if he doesn't die.I learned many things on this shoot.

Myke Hawke is amazing. This man is the embodiment of the old adage, "never quit." His Special Forces training, medic background and most importantly his ability to instill that kind of motivation in others gave me the confidence to move mountains.

I can now build fires, make shelter and feed myself in the wild, but I also learned that I have been piling up some pretty extensive expertise on my own. Like feeding myself on limpets thanks to my Molokai bothers taking the time to school me on how to find and harvest them.

I now know I can only go 48 hours without breaking down and puddle-ing up into my 21st Century spoiled little kid mode. Here's a behind the scenes glimpse: the show ends with breakfast on the last morning and the idea was that I survived 48 hours, and am being rewarded with "breakfast in bed" courtesy of a lady chef who Hawke knows. Superb chilequiles by the way ... but I digress. So about 6 hours before that, in the earliest blackest hours of the morning, one of my producers sneaks into my camp and hands me 3 mini-Hershey bars, the Halloween kind. I was thrilled. I had been living on sweat, rotten weeds, sea critters and all while wearing one change of clothes. I ate them greedily and went back to bed. Now that was not technically cheating since I had gone 2 "days" without a nosh. But the next morning Hawke chewed my butt like a stripped down private in boot camp! He came into camp and tossed my gear while I was sleeping and found the teensiest little piece of wrapper ... BUSTED!

Anyway, on to Bizarre World ... and to all the fans out there, thanks for all you do ... and remember: if it looks good, eat it!

This Myke Hawke is probably the biggest fraud I've ever come across. I don't know how he has managed to convince the crowd he runs in that he is legit, but unfortunately he is not. There is no way that he has been able to accomplish everything he has listed on his personal website. It is really disappointing that a well respected channel such as the travel channel would use him as a survival "expert". Perhaps a routine check with the Special Forces Association would be in order to discern the validity of a so called Special Forces soldiers' claims.

Andrew, just watched the Survival show and loved it. I liked how you were so unsure of what you had gotten yourself into in the beginning. But, by the end of the two days you were confident, had built a shelter, made fire and were surviving after a small little feast. Thoroughly enjoyed it and a great show. Thanks. I always ask about you whenever we got to Carnegie Deli!!! So sad this was the final episode but you did amazing. I love to camp and your skills were already above average. Way to go. You, your friends, and loved ones must be so proud of you because so are all your fans. Congrats, Sir. Can't wait to catch the new show.

We hope you go on for years to come!! God bless you and we look forward to your new season in September! It can't come fast enought!!! Sincerely, Lisa and Delly - Northern New Jersey

I love this show because it gives me the pleasure and anticipation as if I was actually going to these wonderful places around the globe, which hopefully I will be able to do in my lifetime. I love your show! I'll eat almost anything, like you except mustard. I HATE MUSTARD.

    Amy J. - June 19 2009 @ 4:40 pm

What?! My hubby was just watching this last night and laughing his rear off about your singing "Fiiiire" (had to call me into the room to watch it)! I'm sure he didn't know it was the last one, as I didn't until I read this. So we wait until Sept. for Bizarre World - OK - part excitement for the new thing and part ALAS for no more B.F.!

Our daughter is now 6, but when she was around 3 we were watching an episode - it was right at the opening - and she looked at me and said, in all seriousness, "He is going to eat some BIZARRE FOOD." I laughed and said, "Yep, he is!" and asked her what 'bizarre' meant. She replied, "DELICIOUS." =:) We still laugh about that!

I watched your survival episode the other night and I am sad to hear that it is going to be your last. You did great! I know I would have been a blubbering idiot within hours. The one thing that really struck me funny was Myke Hawke's voice. I was not watching the TV but, when I heard his voice and thought it was a joke. I thought that he was just nervous and it would change by the end of the show. It never did. I really don't want to come across as insulting but, you try and listen to him without seeing him and tell me it wasn't funny.
I am looking forward to your new series.

I'm so sorry to see your show end!! My 14 year old son, Alex, and I watch every week - even reruns! We live in Arkansas and my parents live in Indiana. My Dad and I call each other, totally amazed at your bizarre foods! You will be soooo missed! You have made us much more adventurous eaters!!

    Cory - June 23 2009 @ 8:13 pm

Great series. One comment, you don't spear a crawfish, you catch them. In NH we catch them to use when bass fishing. It's like catching a fly. You do it from the front. Flys and crawfish move backwards. Put a hand or net behind the crayfish then go for it from the front. It will back into your hand or net.

I'm so very sorry to see the show end, but look forward to the new one! I have to say that the thing I admire most about you and your show is the respect you show to other people and their cultures. I do have one question, You are Jewish? You eat pork? I was under the impression that pork was a no-no for jewish people. Not a judgment, just wondering if I am mistaken. Your show on PR drove me nuts! I am salivating even now writing about it and thinking about the roasted pigs!I have only had whole roasted pig one time and I dream about it! Sigh! Loads of luck on the new show!

Hey Andrew, please consider beautiful and mysterious Greenland as one of your next food destinations...there has been very little or no coverage of this unique and mostly unexplored country...I happen to find it and its people fascinating. I am most certain that you could find some very 'Bizarre Foods' within its glorious realm!! I'll be waiting and watching!! I am one of your biggest fans of your show!

    Sincerely Ramona Kent

Andrew - Excellent shows... BUT you could have been more adventurous in the Philippines.. While you capture balut and the tasty grubs in the comercialized restaraunt, you missed the very bizarre Kapampanagan foods in central Luzon.. a must try would be betute, dinaugan and sisig --better than the innards of africa you ate but consisting of similar ingredients.. From a man who has been eating everything for years and Respectfully yours, from Detroit - 220 lb TOM

I'm not sure what to do next year. My roommates and I watched every episode, and every marathon. Even attempted to get ahold of as many of the things you tried as we could. You should see some of the things us college kids eat...
Anyway, thank you...and next year when I'm studying abroad in London I hope to visit some of the places you recommended.

    Hello Andrew,
Hope you're doing well the family with all of this traveling. Once again, my name is Marc Calix and I am a Neurophysiologist living in Santa Monica, CA from Haiti. I grew up in Haiti for nine years of my life; just a quick back ground. I wrote on your blog before after I saw a segment you did about Haitian food in Miami. Your show, Bizarre Foods is one of my most favorite shows to watch on TV. I am so culturally inclined and everytime I watch Bezarre Foods, I feel Haiti and its bezarre foods have yet to be explore. I may not be the only Haitian to constantly invite you to explore this beautiful culture; but I assure you we, haitians can blow your mind with some the greatest and bizarre foods that we eat there. Tonight, I saw your bannana eating experience on your survivor experience, I said to myself, please don't eat that raw cause that is not how it was met to be eaten. You've proven me right because you could not. Anyway, please, allow me to show you the real Haiti and its elements that have yet to be discorvered by you nor the rest of this wonderful world. I love this country, Haiti and I hope you are reading this blog.

    Kindly,

    Marc Calix

    Hey Andrew!

I am currently watching your survival episode right now, and I can't believe you! I just love your show and think you are such an awesome down to earth person!

I actually started watching your show with an early episode in St. Petersburg, Russia. I even left you a comment back then about how amazing the city looked. Since then, I've been hooked and can't believe the bizarre things you've eaten along the way.

I'm sad to see it end, you definitely made the show interesting and entertaining. Thank you and best of luck!

    Hey there Andrew,
The Travel Channel has a real gem with your show. I would hope that one of the major networks would note your unique genius and pick up your shows in a syndication (or even promote some new episodes). Regardless of the food you partake you are always gracious, finding positive in the taste, texture, scent, or art of preparation. You are a food enthusiast like no other, and I'd like to thank you for sharing your experiences with the viewing public. Kudos to you Mr. Zimmern!

    Mr.Zimmern,

I am still upset that you didn't like the rotten meat for breakfast in Morocco. Sure it smells like crap...BUT MAN ITS GOOD! My husband is Moroccan and we have to sneak it into the country! There is nothing like it. Try it again man, really! -MJ

I'm realy excited for this Bizaare Worlds show. I remember thinking how great it was on one episode (with the glass bubbles on his back!) that it was about culture, not just food. I Love this show regardless. Does anyone know if Andrew is going to revisit some of the places he's already been? I would really like to see him to go to a Geisha party in Japan! Anthony did it! LOL.
I love the show, Andrew, KEEP IT UP!

    Shireen - July 17 2009 @ 12:57 pm

Nooooo! Please don't say it's your last episode! It was the only show that I TiVo'd. Having lived in Africa, Europe and the US I could really enjoy your adventures on a sympathetic level. My favorite episodes were the ones where you had to go into villages and try so hard not to look disgusted to avoid insulting your humble hosts. I've been there, too, but you deserve some mad props. Now I'm kicking myself for not trying the scorpion when I was in China last year. If you ever decide to continue the show know that you have an eager fan. Much love! You ROCK!!!

Mr. Zimmern, what can I say? I am an author from Georgia who has been shying away from television during my work. I do always keep it on, however, to glance at it every now and then. Once I discovered Bizarre foods, I was instantly hooked. If it's not Bourdain or Zimmern forget it. Not worth even watching. It fascinates me to no end.

I saw Bizarre foods was coming to a close, but now I see this Bizarre world stuff and I'll be right there, same bat time, same bat channel. Props to what you're doing and happy travels, see you soon.

If you ever get a shot to pass through Georgia, hit me and my friends up. We could treat you to a suckling boar...

My dear Andrew! My kids and I are happy to know that your new show is coming soon. However, my 10 year old boy (doesn't it figure!) wants to know if you will still be eating your "cool food" (he calls it)he loves watching his sister make funny faces at your choice of good eats! We love your show and I am sure we will love the new one coming up. One more quick note: we were at a pig roast, my timid daughter walked up to the roast master and asked for the eye and brain. I asked her why she bravely said "It looked good, I ate it"
Good luck with your new show and we will be watching!

You are amazing! I have traveled the world, and to see you experience the same things I have makes my travel bug flare up! You have a great respect for other cultures and traditions, and I never see you turn your nose up to anything! You earn the respect of your hosts and your viewers!

You taught me to try everything twice which has opened up my diet and added an amazing array of flavors to my palate.

We must be long lost twins, or maybe you are my real father! Watching your show has been an experience in itself, and I'm glad the travel channel is good enough to us to air your show most of the day! You are my Foodie Idol and you have inspired me to eat the extreme, try the bizzare, and sure as hell if it looks good, I've eaten it!

Andrew - you have inspired me and my GF to try new things (well maybe more me then her :>). We both enjoy your show though tremendously! As much as I will miss this show, I look forward to your next one. Don't forget all the Bizarre Food fans though and keep finding those interesting items to eat. Two questions though - what was your fave item of all and what was the worst? Just wondering.

Andrew, It has been soooo much fun watching you on Bizarre Foods, I must Thank you so much. My late father was huge fan of yours. He was home bound for the most part and watched your show all the time. You and the foods you ate gave us much to talk about. It really gave him much joy in a sometimes lonely time. I really felt like he lived the adventure with you. Thank you again.

You are a pleasure to watch. My family and I are big fans. My youngest son who is the picky eater of the bunch has finally come around to trying new foods. Nothing as spectacular as what you eat but never the less new. Thanks to you and the show. Good luck on your new show we will be watching.
    Thank you.
